Anthony Barry Explains The Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
In the past, Barry featured in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed on helping the England manager claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His journey from athlete to trainer started through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He had found his calling.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing with his first major job, he developed a name through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career included Chelsea and Bayern Munich, plus he took on roles with national teams with the Republic of Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with stars like world-class talents. Today, as part of Team England, he's fully immersed, the top according to him.
“Everything starts with a dream … However, I hold that obsession can move mountains. You dream big but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ We aim for World Cup victory. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process that allows us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Passion, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock all the time, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their methods feature player analysis, a heat-proof game model for the finals abroad, and creating a unified squad. The coach highlights the national team spirit and rejects terms like “international break”.
“This isn't a vacation or a break,” Barry notes. “We needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and, secondly, they feel so stretched that going back is a relief.”
Greedy Coaches
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master every aspect of the game,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and we dedicate most of our time to. Our responsibility to not only anticipate of the trends and to lead and set new standards. This is continuous with a mindset of solving issues. And to clarify complicated matters.
“There are 50 days with the players prior to the World Cup. We must implement a complex game for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from thought to data to know-how to performance.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in that window, we have to use all the time available after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections with them. We have to spend time on the phone with them, we need to watch them play, feel them, touch them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we have no chance.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready on the last two for the World Cup preliminaries – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. England have guaranteed qualification after six consecutive victories with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to build on the team's style, for further momentum.
“We are both certain that the football philosophy must reflect all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The national team shirt must be difficult to earn yet easy to carry. It should feel like a cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them an approach that enables them to move and run as they do in club games, that connects with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They should overthink less and increase execution.
“There are morale boosts for managers in attack and defense – building from the defense, closing down early. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we believe play has stagnated, especially in England's top flight. Coaches have extensive data now. They understand tactics – mid-blocks, deep blocks. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game across those 24 metres.”
Passion for Progress
His desire for development is all-consuming. During his education for the top coaching badge, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into tough situations imaginable to improve his talks. Including a prison locally, where he coached prisoners in a football drill.
He earned his license with top honors, with his thesis – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – got into print. Frank was one of those won over and he brought Barry on to his staff with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the club got rid of most of his staff except Barry.
His replacement at Chelsea took over, and shortly after, they secured European glory. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on in the setup. However, when Tuchel returned with Bayern, he brought Barry over of Chelsea to rejoin him. The FA consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
