‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s road from rehabilitation to success with Athletic Bilbao
Thehe first time Gorka Guruzeta played in the UK, an teenage playing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at Adams Park in fall 2015, he found the net. On his next visit he appeared in England, against the Black Cats two months later, he scored. The third time, against the Citizens soon after, sure enough, he repeated the feat. When he returned to the northwest to face United at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he states, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did their duty: he was replaced.
“I became very upset,” the attacker admits, then chuckling. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the second half: I was without a signed deal, I kept finding the net, many stories circulated, you know how it is. I don’t know about interest from Newcastle, but I came across reports about Manchester United, the typical thing. I’m not certain the validity, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the early training is about to start; following that, the brief trip to the airport and a further journey to the UK, now to play Newcastle in the European elite competition on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for the team, partly because of the pressures of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and fallen to the Gunners and Borussia Dortmund in Europe. But, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation about him.
In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates the showpiece event by the English giants, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the first title in a long wait. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the European competition, where they are countercultural and debuting in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he says.
The player believed it hard enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. The son of the one-time rival player the former professional and a dedicated fan at the club that are now his rivals, Guruzeta is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that produced the coach, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at 17 but after making his senior debut in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, dropped, a demotion and a call back before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.
“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the top level but each step you go through you’re still there and you can observe the approach. You get there but … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his debut and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as something positive because it shifted the outlook. The rehabilitation process is hard, but it aids growth. You cultivate routines previously lacking. It’s not about neglect, but I attended practice and then return home, as a youngster does. At the complex, all resources are available, so take full advantage. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: do them.
“Among professionals you’re going to crash into players who have crashed into players repeatedly. Extremely powerful. Reviewing old images: my legs are chicken legs. Injuries are inevitable. Look at pictures of me now and the change is dramatic. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”
Minutes are crucial. He left upset in that year, aged 23, moving to a lower level. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Players go through it: loans, terminated contracts. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. All the more so after the previous season which, sometimes, was about endurance. From top scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
