Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Claim Initial Wins Following Player Arrests

NBA game action

Miami recorded 86 opening half points against the Grizzlies

Miami Heat claimed a decisive 146-114 victory against the Memphis Grizzlies in their first basketball game after guard Rozier was arrested over suspected illegal gambling.

Portland Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained as part of a broad federal investigation into sports betting. The two individuals contest the claims.

However, the Miami team were focused as they recorded 86 opening half points to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the franchise's 37-year history.

Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later stated Rozier had the team's full backing.

"We support him. Complete backing," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother ultimately."

Miami head coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is very dear to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our locker room.

"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he faces the situation."

Portland also won their first game after the detentions, with Brazil-born Splitter stepping in as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and leading the team to a convincing 139-119 win against the Warriors.

"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Tiago remarked. "Our thoughts are with him and his family but we have a job to do."

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver 'Disturbed' over Arrests

Speaking about the detentions for the initial occasion, league head Silver said he was "deeply disturbed" by the incidents of the past few days.

"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "Therefore I felt uneasy. It was very upsetting."

The commissioner also said an league probe into the player's actions in spring 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a game he played for the Hornets against the Pelicans, discovered no wrongdoing.

"We were informed by the regulators and the betting companies," he added.

"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.

"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the league office can't do.

"So, we've been cooperating since then. Naturally, what they announced recently was an charge.

"And 30 months later, he has not been found guilty of anything, in fairness to Rozier.

"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
