Remembering 766 - Cook's Dominance of Down Under
The legendary 766 runs by an Englishman on an Ashes tour is only bettered by the great Wally Hammond
Brisbane hasn't been a place that offers the English team some much-needed hope for the Ashes
After defeat by the Australian side during the opening match, the tourists must stir themselves ahead of visiting the Gabba, a ground where the English haven't triumphed since 1986
English cricketers have often become lambs to the slaughter in Brisbane
A Shining Knight's Success
Among a recent history of broken English hopes, aspirations and players is a source of inspiration achieved by a cricket hero
This marks 15 years since Alastair Cook conquered the Gabba with a career-defining 235 without loss, saving the first Test from the 2010-11 series paving England's path to their only Ashes series win in Australia over nearly four decades
Unforgettable Series
It commenced of the victorious tour of Australia; three hundreds accumulating 766 runs
Wally Hammond is the only Englishman who has made more runs in a series in this country
The English triumphed 3-1, with every win through innings victories
England hasn't achieved a Test here since that historic campaign
Personal Reflections
"You forget the tough times, the nervousness and anxiety that went into that," Cook recalls
"I reflect proudly. My contribution was substantial in a series when England won 3-1 in Australia with every match was achieved comprehensively"
The Road to Greatness
His journey to down under success began 18 months earlier at the end of that year's Ashes in the UK
Though England triumphed, the opening batsman had an average below 25 with just one score above 50
He desired better
"Despite cricket's collective nature, individual contribution creates the sensation that you must contribute adequately," he explains
Technical Transformation
Two days after the triumphant events, he was back hitting hundreds and hundreds of balls in the nets alongside Graham Gooch
The initial results proved positive
The batsman achieved three hundreds on overseas campaigns against South African and Bangladeshi teams
Career-Defining Moments
When Cook returned to British conditions during the 2010 season, the batsman struggled significantly
In eight innings versus Bangladesh and Pakistan, his top innings reached only 29
On nought not out after the second day of the third Test facing Pakistan at the famous ground, Cook was convinced this would be his last Test innings ahead of potential omission
"I was sitting in the bar, seeking the answer by drowning sorrows," he reveals
The Turning Point
The 110-run innings ensured his position on the plane to Australia
Preparation continued by winning two and drawing one in practice matches down under
When the first Test arrived in Brisbane, they were hit by three wickets from Siddle
Memorable Collaboration
Shortly prior to day three's conclusion, the opening pair started the English reply with a deficit of 221 runs
They achieved 19 without loss when play concluded and proceeded with a performance remembered in Ashes history
"I don't remember specific guidance, anything of what we spoke about," recalls Cook
The left-handers added 188 for the first wicket
The 235 without dismissal represented the top score from an English player down under in eight decades
Series Dominance
England exploited a remarkable opening session of the second Test in Adelaide
Following Anderson's additional wicket Michael Clarke, the hosts stood at 2-3 and couldn't recover
The batsman proceeded his Queensland achievement through a 148-run innings in a Test remembered for Kevin Pietersen dismantling the opposition bowlers
The Final Triumph
England could have retained the Ashes in Perth, however Johnson to foreshadow the havoc that would come later
Then came possibly England's finest day of Ashes cricket in Australia
At the MCG, the 100,000-seater cathedral of Australian cricket, during Boxing Day, the home side collapsed to 98 all out
"If Carlsberg did Boxing Days, this was it. Incredulity reigned as the day ended," says Cook
Ultimate Success
Fuelled by the focus to secure the Ashes, Cook excelled once more in Sydney
His 189 contributed to England's 644, their highest total on Australian soil
The debate didn't concern if victory would come the game and series, but the timing
"The feeling was unbelievable," says Cook
"After Tremlett dismissed the final batsman to secure victory, that was a time of absolute joy"
Legacy and Recognition
Cook was player of the series
The remaining seven years of his cricket journey included further accomplishments
Post-cricket career, he received a knighthood for services to cricket
"{I couldn't have played any better|
