The network's Leading Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. In an era often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness resonated deeply and helped it become a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series centers on three polite teenage brothers whose central trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their everyday routines.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
