The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Utter Faith' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes club a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it inevitably draws praise and attention.
During his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight berth.
At 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's previous mark by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He joined Real from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in the new year.
Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and awarded him minutes during pre-season.
However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated the player following his debut.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in La Liga against Getafe - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and experience.
"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," remarked Arbeloa. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His greatest quality is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.
"I realize fans might be surprised to see him start in a Champions League match, but he is selected because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, representing both the under-19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja reached the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with Spain, but I will reach a decision in the near future."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
For now, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a 5-1 overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the team pursue future success.
After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the same. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I have to deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the win at Manchester.
